The Second Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art // Igor Shevelyov, Vzglyad
Recently a TV anchor of one “patriotic” TV channel suggested that the artists who participated in the Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art should be boycotted, and asked what Sokolov, the Minister of Culture, thought about it. The latter responded that he expressed his attitude to the Biennale with the fact that he did not visit either the opening or any action of the event.
The attitude of champions of traditional art would hardly change by the time of the Second Biennale to be held from February 22 to March 2007. There is only a weak chance that we will have a different Minister of Culture then.

52 Million Rubles Worth of Commercial Art // Irina Kulik, Kommersant
The Federal Agency for Culture and Cinematography held the first press conference on the Second Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art that is to open on February 22, 2007. Mikhail Shvydkoy, the head of the Agency, informed the public when he opened the conference that 52 million rubles have already been allocated in the budget of this year for it, and some money will also be allocated for it in the budget of the next year. Mr. Shvydkoy reminded the public that contemporary art is to remain provocative (or it will be boring), yet it must somehow manage to avoid hurting anybody’s feelings. Then, for some reason, he spoke of the notorious Da Vinci Code movie which, despite its Hollywood simplicity, somehow managed to arouse the indignation of militant Christians. Fortunately, the theme of the Biennale stated yesterday does not seem to give any grounds for panic in this respect. It is formulated in the following way: “Geopolitics, Markets, Amnesia. FOOTNOTES”, so if anybody intends to get offended, he or she will have to take great effort to find the reason for it.
