Artistic footnotes

// Hermitage Magazine, winter 2006 - 2007
31 january 2007

The Second Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art will run from 1 March to 1 April 2007 and promises to be the top event of the art season. The move from | winter to spring is not the only visible change. Unlike the First Moscow Biennale, the international team of curators - who remain the same - wlfl present a number of different shows produced by individuals or groups of curators, instead of a common collective project. All projects will share the common theme of Geopolitics, Markets, Amnesia. FOOTNOTES, As commissioner Joseph Backstein notes: "Perhaps we can speak today of the footnotes - the comments that art itself makes at the margins of macroeconomic battles. Today, the commentary and the marginal notes made by artists in relation to ' statements spoken in the language of the Capital, in the discourses of Politics with a capital P, seem more and more crucial."
Besides the two traditional exhibition zones - the History Museum on Red Square and the Schusyev Museum of Architecture - several of the main shows will be hosted in the new building of the TSUM Shopping Centre, before it is officially opened. The programme of special projects wiil offer an extensive picture of contemporary art in Russia and the post-Soviet space - the driving force behind last year's event. Highlights in 2007 include a show of Russian and Chinese Sots Art curated by Andrey Yerofeyev, head of contemporary art at the Tretyakov Gallery, and The Great Turning Point, a project by Ekaterina Dyogot.
Works by international artists of world renown will be presented as part of a separate programme entitled Special Guests of the Biennaie, The famous names eagerly awaited in Moscow this spring include Andreas Gursky, Valie Export, Jeff Wall, Yoko Ono, Robert Wilson and Pipilotti Rist. The Second Moscow Biennaie of Contemporary Art puts particular emphasis on the educational programme. This year, an excursion office will offer visitors special guidebooks and audio excursions. // Andrey Shabanov
