The setting up of unnatural links between phenomena, endowing things with characteristics and qualities foreign to them- this is the distinguishing feature of Diana Machulina’s works. In the depiction of the everyday the artist reveals signs of ‘the other’. On the head of a happy girl there flutters a flypaper-ribbon. Joy becomes a sinister sign whose illogicality forces the viewer to abandon the ‘area of automatism and standard reactions’.
